AIMS

  • Establish and implement a pilot project mechanism to provide post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty, and other ESIs at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) with opportunities to generate preliminary data on Structural Violence and its impact on health outcomes (e.g., CVD, cancer, mental health) in race, ethnic, and sexual minority populations. At least half of our pilot project awardees will be scholars of diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide formal mentoring for ESI pilot awardees, in order to ensure successful and timely completion of funded pilot projects, and development of manuscripts and subsequent extramural grant applications. We will provide mentored hands-on research experiences within the Center’s in-house research projects and data in the design, conduct, and analysis of larger studies.
  • To provide career development opportunities to ESIs, to enhance their communication, oral presentation, scientific manuscript, research dissemination and grant-writing skills essential for success as independent scientists, to provide training related to community partnerships and community-engaged research, as well as to increase their cultural understanding/ competency and knowledge of the ethics of science and responsible conduct of research as relevant to conducting research involving vulnerable minority groups.
  • To employ an ongoing evaluation and feedback process to ensure timely completion of goals and objectives by the individual pilot projects and the overall Core.
  • To promote a collaborative multidisciplinary, interdepartmental, and inter-collegiate, mentoring and resource-sharing environment across the UIC and UC campuses.
